Tonight’s free play in the NBA comes from a potential intriguing matchup between the Phoenix Suns and the Brooklyn Nets. If Kevin Durant plays (questionable with an ankle injury) it would be the first time suiting up against his former Nets team - lots to like there. With the unknown status of Durant the Suns find themselves as slight favorites in the game. We like them to take advantage in the first quarter tonight. Phoenix is 14-8-1 in 1st quarter spreads this season. They are the 8th best team in the NBA for 1st quarter margin and are particularly good at home. Brooklyn has an average losing margin in road games and lost the 1st quarter on Monday night by 8 points. Statistically, both teams rank similarly in scoring and defense, but there is an important discrepancy. Brooklyn is HORRIBLE defensively early in road games, giving up the 5th most 1st quarter points in the entire NBA at 31.4/game. The Suns should be able to take advantage here, particularly if their shooters knock down a few early threes. The opposition will bring up the fact that Phoenix is playing in a back-to-back after beating Golden State last night, but that doesn’t deter us in this spot. The Suns are 3-0 playing on zero rest this season and they have dominated each game, winning by an average margin of 9.7 points and covering the spread by 4.2 points/game in these scenarios. Phoenix has one of the best combinations of role players on any team and with Booker, Beal, and maybe Durant, they should have enough scoring to get us to the window tonight!
